40,000 tons of non-biodegradable plastics were thrown into our landfills in the year of 1989. Since then, every year that amount has grown. In 2002, it was estimated to be 78,000 tons. In 2004, around the world, 1.8 billion cartridges were dumped into the ground. Every toner cartridge contains oil and non-biodegradable parts that will stay in the environment for generations to come. When you use a recycled toner cartridge, you are helping to reduce the amount of plastics and non-biodegradables poured into the earth. This can make a big difference to our environmental future.
Landfill STILL gets over 80% of our old cartridges!
Did you know that as a nation we consume around 20 million printing cartridges every year? Together that equals about 5,000 tones! Our way of dealing with this relatively new kind of waste issue has been and unfortunately still is mainly landfill. Over time the properties of cartridges that hold toxic substances will slowly break down in the earth. All of this will eventually make its way into the surrounding environment and create hazardous waste issues for the future.
More info on the cartridge!
Did you know that a cartridge put into the ground will take around 450 years to decompose? Some industrial-grade plastic within ink and laser cartridges could take up to 1000 years to decompose! It makes plenty of sense to get into reusing already existing toner and inkjet cartridges when the resources consumed to produce brand new cartridges are far greater than simply remanufacturing pre-used cartridges, or for that matter the eventual price of landfill on our environment. The good news is that many kinds of office equipment can be put into this process of reuse and of course recycle.
By using the Ink on the Run service, you help to encourage and create sustainable opportunities for recycled content products in Australia. You will also contribute to reduce the amount of non-biodegradable waste in our landfills.
